    We seek an experienced Communications Manager who will strengthen our creativity and effectiveness in identifying and leveraging media, partner, and industry engagement opportunities to elevate the visibility of our work— ultimately supporting Accion’s mission of building a financially inclusive world.

    Position Summary:


    The Communications Manager is responsible for developing and implementing focused external engagement strategies. Playing a key role in the execution of Accion’s broader communications strategy, s/he coordinates the organization’s announcements; builds and maintains relationships with media; helps secure and manage external speaking opportunities; prepares spokespeople for media and speaking opportunities; and works with counterparts at Accion’s partners on joint initiatives and announcements. This is a senior position in a dynamic, mission-driven and diverse organization.


    This team member works across internal teams and with external partners. The role is based in Washington DC with occasional travel, and reports to Accion’s Senior Director of Engagement.



    Cross-team communications activities (20%)

    • Develop strategic plans for the rollout of investment, partnership, and knowledge product announcements.
    • Align efforts with external partners.
    • Manage Accion’s external
    • Identify and leverage follow-up engagement opportunities.
    • Liaise with internal teams and external partners to maintain announcement pipeline.
    • Manage key aspects of communications campaigns and rollouts. Evaluate and report results, offering recommendations for improvements.

    Earned media activities (45%)

    • Develop and maintain relationships with relevant media in key countries and in global outlets to advance Accion’s work.
    • Support the development of Accion’s earned media strategy.
    • Draft and coordinate timely and accurate reviews of press releases, media pitches, and other media materials.
    • Provide strategic guidance and talking points to prepare spokespeople for media interviews; research and coordinate media opportunities.
    • Support and participate in media trainings.
    • Act strategically to identify and leverage media opportunities.
    • Monitor media coverage of Accion and its
    • Track Accion’s media engagement activities.


    Partner/industry engagement/Speaker Bureau support (30%)

    • Identify and help secure speaking engagement opportunities for key staff in relevant industry events.
    • Work directly with global and in-market spokespeople, providing guidance and talking points to prepare them for media and speaking opportunities.
    • Manage key event partnerships – help identify and shape opportunities, facilitate partnership agreements, and ensure follow-through for relevant communications activities.
    • Coordinate with external partners to align on objectives and co-create public engagement opportunities.
    • Support execution of events to build Accion’s brand.
    • Take initiative with Accion’s efforts to engage public, industry, and partner audiences.

    Management and administrative activities (5%)

    • Manage media and engagement-related contracts and subscriptions; liaise with vendors.
    • Track KPIs for growing Accion’s reach and engagement.
    • Other management and administrative activities, as needed.


    The ideal candidate has substantial and progressive experience in communications, including multiple years of engaging directly with reporters. S/he has an understanding of today’s digital media landscape and a passion for social good. She or he must possess excellent written and oral communication skills and have the collegiality and interpersonal skills necessary to work closely with internal program teams, Accion’s senior leadership, and both communications counterparts and leadership of our external partners across various global markets. The ideal candidate brings an awareness of topics relevant to our work, such as fintech, financial inclusion, SDGs/development, and impact investing. Specifically:


    • Bachelor’s degree, Masters preferred
    • 8-10 years of full-time professional work experience with increasing levels of responsibility in the area of strategic communications.
    • Demonstrated success in building and maintaining relationships with media to promote visibility of his/her organization/company.
    • Digital and social media acumen and an understanding of today’s digitally-driven media landscape.
    • Ability to manage complex projects on time and within budget.
    • Strong writing and editing skills.
    • Spanish fluency strongly preferred.
    • Experience working with media in the primary regions in which Accion works – Latin America, southeast Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa – a plus.
    • Agency experience a plus.
