Position Summary:

Accion International is seeking a Legal Intern who will be responsible for assisting in-house legal staff in the following: drafting and negotiating contracts, researching employment law matters, assisting in the provision of advice to internal clients, and for providing general support to the Legal Department in areas of law as needed.  The Legal Intern would also be responsible for certain compliance-related tasks regarding the development and maintenance of, and training on, organizational policies and procedures. The ideal candidate would be looking to gain legal and compliance experience within the context of international development and financial inclusion and would have the ability to manage multiple projects with urgent deadlines with a sense of humor.

Key Milestones: 

Contract Management

  • Assist in all aspects of contract negotiation, including: drafting contracts, providing advice to internal clients and management, tracking contract execution processes, and recordkeeping;
  • Assist with management of control tools to mitigate legal risks associated with contract negotiation;
  • Assist in expanding the infrastructure of the Legal Department, which includes drafting and reviewing template legal documents for the organization; and
  • Assist with training of staff in use of template legal documents and related procedures, as well as other legal topics.

Organizational Compliance

  • Assist in ensuring that policy and procedure documentation is up to date and maintained by key policy and process owners throughout Accion;
  • Support maintenance of database of all organization-wide policies and procedural documents, including version control and policy owners; and
  • Support policy owners by assisting with regular review, updates, training and refreshers are completed annually and as necessary.

Other Duties

  •  Assist in advising on employment matters, including global deployment of staff members;
  • Research specific questions of law relevant to Accion’s global activities;
  • Assist in supporting investment transactions, including reviewing and editing underlying documentation;
  • Assist in the development of training materials and coordination and presentation of training for Accion employees; and
  • Draft and assist with preparation of memos and presentations.

Learning Opportunities: 

  • Better understand Accion’s advisory work and client engagements;
  • Gain insights into the goals and challenges of FSPs serving the low-income, underserved populations in developing countries, particularly regarding the strategic use of data;
  • Gain appreciation and understanding of customer needs and how financial services can create economic opportunity and build livelihoods;



  • Currently enrolled in Law School.
  • Excellent organizational skills and very strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated written and oral English language skills and ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work both as a team member and independently.
  • Interest in impact investing, employment and not-for-profit law, domestic and international economic development matters.
  • Interested in our mission and working globally.
